AUBURN – New Auburn’s right fielder Kyle Giguere caught the ball, then threw a laser to catcher Matt Meserve, who put the tag on a sliding Elgin Strout to preserving the win and the split of an afternoon doubleheader with Gray Post 86, 9-8.
Meserve was key the inning before for New Auburn, delivering a bases-loaded double to clear the bases and giving New Auburn the 9-8 lead.
Brian Erickson, Brady Blackmon and Giguere had two hits apiece for New Auburn, while Tim Deluca and Matt Moberg had two hits apiece for Gray.
Mike Muise picked up the win in relief, while Justin Ciszewski shut down the Gray hitters in the seventh to claim the save.
The first game of the day was a lopsided affair, finding Gray taking advantage of nine New Auburn errors for a 15-1 triumph.
Lenny Pierce had two hits in the opener for Gray and drove in four runs, while Deluca added three RBIs. On the mound Deluca was more then New Auburn could handle, allowing six hits, walking none, while striking out six.
Following the split of the doubleheader New Auburn is 8-2 and Gray Post 86 is 3-8.
Mech. Falls, Bath split
BATH – Jerry Goss pitched a superb 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run for the win in the nightcap as Mechanic Falls split, 1-6 and 4-2, with Smith-Tobey of Bath in Zone III Legion baseball action at McMann Field on Saturday.
Jim Ouellette nailed down three RBIs on two hits as Smith-Toby (8-4) turned a 1-0 deficit in their favor with six unanswered runs from the fourth to sixth innings of the opener. David Lutz scored the lone Mechanic Falls (3-5) run in the third inning.
With the score tied in the fifth inning, Joe Douglass hit a sacrifice-fly to score the go-ahead run for Mechanic Falls, and David Lutz executed a spiffy suicide squeeze with Jackie MacVane crossing the plate safely for the eventual game-winning run. Josh Clark had a pair of hits and scored a run for Smith-Toby in the loss.
