Mall-area crash injures one

AUBURN – A Lisbon Falls woman sustained only minor injuries after the car she was driving was flipped onto two other vehicles in a late afternoon crash Saturday near the Auburn Mall.

Helene Jarvis, 54, of 6 Vining St., was traveling north on Turner Street about 4:30 p.m. when she entered the Mount Auburn Avenue intersection. A car driven by Edward J. Kuebler, 76, 536 Plains Road, Harrison, failed to stop at the red light and struck Jarvis’ 1999 Honda, according to police reports.

The impact caused the Honda to roll over two stopped vehicles in the southbound lane of Turner Street: a 2002 Chrysler driven by Neal Labrecque, 46, of 48 Robinson Garden, Lewiston, and a 2001 Chevrolet, driven by Esther Norton, 65, 14 Pleasant St., Lisbon Falls.

The force of the collision with Jarvis’ car pushed Norton’s into another vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Lisa Hinkley, 34 of Sabattus, also stopped in traffic.

Police said Jarvis received only minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.

Damage to Jarvis’ Honda was estimated at $10,000; to Kuebler’s 2000 Oldsmobile, $5,000; to Labrecque’s Chrysler, $5,500; to Norton’s Chevrolet, $6,500; and to Hinkley’s Chevrolet, $1,000.

No charges were filed.

Sinkhole disrupts Auburn traffic

AUBURN – A sinkhole forced the closure of the intersection of Broad and Mill streets Sunday.

A portion of the road caved in, creating a hazard that closed the road around 9:15 p.m. Crews from the Auburn Water Department are expected to be on the scene Monday to locate the source of the problem, which public safety officials thought could be a broken water main or sewer pipe. Police said they received no calls complaining about water pressure from that neighborhood Sunday evening.

Only emergency vehicles will be allowed through the intersection until it is deemed safe. Police advise motorists to use Riverside Drive in the meantime.
