HUDSON, Ohio – It is with great sadness that we report Evelyn May (Sawyer) Wait, 91, died in her sleep on Friday, July 1, at the home of her daughter, Anne (Wait) Cirincione, with whom she has been living since she left Lewiston in 1996.

She was born in Houlton, on Jan. 16, 1914, the daughter of Ralph E. and Grace (Timberlake) Sawyer.

At an early age, her family moved to Wilton, where she attended grade schools and Wilton Academy. She went to college at Farmington and received her teaching degree. She later received her B.S. degree from the University of Maine in Orono. She taught kindergarten classes at Farwell School in Lewiston for 25 years.

She married Robert B. Wait in 1939. After teaching at Deerfield Academy and the University of Massachusetts, he became a professor of biology at Bates College where he taught for 27 years. He predeceased her in March 1991.

She leaves three children, twins Anne (John) Cirincione of Ohio, and Brooks “Chip” (Judy) Wait of Colorado; a daughter, Janie (Gil) Hembree of Texas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. We will all miss her very much.
