Scrabble games

AUBURN – The Scrabble Club met June 26 and tournament players Tom Davis and Sean McKinney battled it out in a close game, 465-446, while novices Pam Thoits and Esther Shapiro were even closer, 283-277.

Shapiro won two of her games, while Club Director Sharon Hawkes managed to win all three of hers, by playing two bingos in each game.

Highest-scoring bingo (by Hawkes) was SPIKIER for 104. Highest non-bingo was XENIA, played by McKinney for 81 points, by placing the X on a triple letter square next to an E, and ending the word on a double word square. With plays like that, he didn’t need a bingo!

Play will resume at the next club meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Great Falls School, High Street in Auburn. Players at all levels are invited to attend. Call 344-0026 for more information.
