NORWAY – Irene Stevens Eastman, 84, of Front Street, Sumner, died peacefully July 4, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital after a brief illness, with her loving family by her side and with the support of her many friends and neighbors.

She was born in Sumner on June 18, 1921, the daughter of the late Carl and Ada (Thayer) Stevens Sr., and was educated in Sumner schools.

She had worked for several years at the Norway Shoe Shop and had been a homemaker most of her life.

She married Albert E. Eastman on July 29, 1939, and was married for 66 years; he died just six months ago, on Jan. 4.

She was a faithful member of the West Sumner Universalist Church and a member of the Mountain View Chapter 197 O.E.S. of Buckfield. She was a former member of the Women’s Relief Corp and active in the Pleasant Pond Cemetery Association. She and her husband owned and operated Bisbee Orchards for many years.

She was dedicated to her family and she was responsible for arranging family reunions. She loved watching her grandchildren play sports. She was an avid Celtics and Red Sox fan. She was noted for her cooking, especially for her baked beans and custard pies.

She is survived by one son, Thaine Eastman and his wife, Gail, of West Sumner; one daughter, Joan Campbell and her husband, Fred, of West Sumner; three brothers, Howard Stevens and his wife, Edith, of Canton, Harley Stevens of South Paris and Carl Stevens Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many special nieces, nephews and neighbors.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years; one sister, Marion Hazelton; and two brothers, Dwight Stevens and Stanley Stevens.
