College workshop

PARIS – The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will hold a workshop, “The Essentials of College Planning,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 11, at the South Paris Career Center, 232 Main St. The workshop is free. Call 1-800-281-3703 to register.

Center services include assistance in choosing a college, tutoring, personal and financial counseling, career counseling, assistance in applying to college, workplace and college visits and assistance in applying for financial aid.

Coalition lunch

BRIDGTON – The Lake Region Healthy Community Coalition will meet for lunch at noon Tuesday, July 12. Members and guests will attend a summer barbecue at the Bridgton Community Center at 15 Depot St.

The coalition is a grassroots organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement. The coalition is a sponsor of the Regional Trails Summits, Communities Mobilized for Change on Alcohol – to reduce underage drinking and youth access to alcohol, the Senior Transportation Program, among other community initiatives.

BETHEL – The July meeting of the Oxford County Republican Committee will be held on Tuesday, July 12, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by a barbecue at 6:30 p.m. at the residence of Stanley Howe, Broad Street, across from the Bethel Inn. The barbecue will be hosted by the Bethel Republican Committee.

The speaker will be Lucas Caron, campaign manager for Sen. Olympia Snowe. Norm Ferguson, county coordinator for the recent People’s Veto Referendum to stop the borrowing, will report on that effort.

Workshops set

SUMNER – Hedgehog Hill Farm will host two workshops to learn the art of making papers by hand on Thursday and Saturday, July 14 and 16. Jim Neal will use primitive techniques with plant fibers found in Maine and traditional fibers used in Asia. No tree fibers will be used in producing the papers.

Children are welcome to sign up for workshops if accompanied by an adult. The workshops are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a light lunch and all the materials provided as part of the $45 registration fee. To register, call 388-2341.

Gospel program

OXFORD – The Heaven’s Blend Quartet will be at the Hosanna Church for an evening of praise and worship music at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17.

The quartet is made up of four ordained ministers: pastor Carroll Pennell of the Word of God Fellowship Church in Brunswick; pastor of music Tim Connolly of the same church; pastor Gary Leet of the Lisbon Free Baptist Church; and pastor Tom Rawley of the Waldoboro Pentecostal Assembly Church.

Each member has been in music ministry for several years prior to their paths crossing in 2001. Since that time, they have been together as Heaven’s Blend Quartet. Their music style is southern gospel and they also do their own compositions.

Society picnic

WEST PARIS – The West Paris Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, July 18, at the Smith camp on North Pond. Members should bring a picnic supper. Officers will be elected and dues collected. The society is looking for donations for its bake sale to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 6. Call Betty Jones at 674-2507.
