Editor’s note: Every day there are rays of light that shine into the lives of people through their neighbors, their co-workers, their families and even through complete strangers. This column is devoted to exposing these sunbeams to the light and offering readers an opportunity to share good news. We plan to occasionally offer up our own sunbeams, too.
Rescue

I would like to publicly thank a couple of kind citizens who assisted in our “rescue” on June 19 along the River Road in Auburn.

While fishing on the Androscoggin River, my family and I were involved in a near fatal boating accident. My daughter, after fighting to save her life in the rapids, climbed the river bank and began to flag down cars for assistance. Many drivers went right by, swerving around her, until one kind older lady came to the rescue and went to a nearby store to call 911.

An off-duty police officer also stopped to assist.

I thank both for being where we needed you to be at that moment. Our thanks also go to the fire, police, ambulance personnel and game warden who responded.

Helping hand

My wife and I are pushing 80 years old and are truly limited in our physical capabilities. The United Way Day of Caring volunteers heard of our situation and offered to help us out.

There were three volunteers. Two did a superb job of housecleaning while the other person did yard work – weed whacking, trimming bushes and hauling away debris.

When offered refreshments, they politely declined and then left to help someone else.

In our society, there are still many young people who take pleasure in helping others without any thought of recompense.

We offer our thanks and wish God’s blessing on all of them.
