DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – The University of New Hampshire has won more than $3 million in grants for research on environmental problems including the red tide that has hit the New England coast this summer.

An institute that partners with UNH and the government is awarding grants for a dozen UNH projects.

One project is especially timely this summer, as the red tide closes shellfishing operations along the coast. It will examine ways to make testing for the algae blooms quicker and more efficient.

Other projects are looking into improving stormwater and wastewater management and treating contamination in coastal waters and estuaries.
