PORTLAND – Portland Sea Dogs left-handed pitcher Jon Lester has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 4 – July 10.

Lester made one start during the week, tossing seven shutout innings in a 5-0 Portland victory over the Trenton Thunder. The 21 year-old struck out 12 batters, did not allow a walk and gave up only five hits improving his record to 6-2 on the season. Lester is currently second in the League in strikeouts with 101 and is tied for third in the league with a 2.56 ERA. Lester will represent the Sea Dogs in the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 13 at Hadlock Field in Portland.

Lester was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of thr June 2002 draft. He is rated as the #4 prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America.

First women’s drag race set for Oxford

OXFORD – The first Ladies Powderpuff Drag Race has been scheduled for Oxford Plains Dragway this Saturday.

The race begins at 3 p.m. and is for street legal cars only. First prize is $100.
