GILFORD, N.H. (AP) – Several major studies are planned to analyze the growth of milfoil in New Hampshire lakes and ponds.

Officials plan to use the results of six studies during the next 14 months to learn more about how and where the invasive weed grows.

One study will include mapping the bottom of Moultonboro Bay, searching for the conditions most conducive to the growth and spread of milfoil.

The state Department of Environmental Services says the study is important because so little is known about the kind of milfoil hitting New Hampshire waters. The plant grows quickly and crowds out native plants.
