RUMFORD – A 32-year-old Madison man was injured early Tuesday morning when the tractor-trailer truck he was driving tipped over at the foot of Falls Hill.
David Ellis was reported in fair condition by a hospital spokeswoman late Tuesday afternoon.
Officer Paul Casey of the Rumford Police Department said Ellis was driving west along Route 108 when he turned to head up Falls Hill. The truck, owned by Northern Maine Hauling of Skowhegan, tipped over, spilling a load of wood chips. Casey said the driver was “tossed about the cab” and sustained injuries to his neck, back and arm.
He was taken by Med-Care Ambulance Service to Rumford Hospital, where he was then taken by medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center.
Traffic was slowed down, stopped, or rerouted for nearly five hours.
Casey said about $40,000 in damage was sustained by the truck cab and trailer.
A small amount of oil and transmission fluid was cleaned up by the Rumford Fire Department while members of the Mexico Fire Department helped reroute traffic. Casey said no hazardous wastes were involved and none of the fluids flowed into a nearby stream.
The truck was righted by MT Pockets of Dixfield.
Casey said the Maine State Police and the local police department are continuing to investigate the accident.
