DIXFIELD – Selectmen on Monday decided to put the question of how or whether to continue looking for a new town manager on their agenda of July 25.

The latest round of advertising, which ended on July 1, netted seven applications, said interim Town Manager John Madigan.

The first round, advertised a couple of months ago, brought in more than 20 and resulted in one interview that did not work out.

Madigan, who is also the town manager of neighboring Mexico, was hired on an interim, half-time basis until the board decides whether to fill former Town Manager Nanci Allard’s position on a full-time basis.

Both the Mexico and Dixfield boards of selectmen agreed to give the idea of sharing one town manager a chance for several weeks. Madigan began his tenure with Dixfield on June 20, and has been Mexico’s town manager since January.

In other matters on Monday, Madigan said Dixfield and Mexico town officials are expected to meet with a Maine Department of Transportation engineer within a few days to discuss the Coburn Avenue Extension Bridge.

He said the latest estimate to repair and replace a large part of the 70-by-18-foot bridge is nearly $120,000. The bridge on the border with Mexico and the costs for replacing it would be divided between the two towns, and possibly with the MDOT, said Madigan.

Three homes are located on the Mexico side and the bridge is the only access to them. The bridge is posted for an eight-ton limit. Fire engines and other emergency vehicles require a 20-ton limit.

In other matters, the board locked in fuel and heating oil prices with Woodstock Oil Co. of Bryant Pond at rates of $1.539 per gallon for 10,000 gallons of heating oil; $1.699 per gallon for 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and $1.649 per gallon for 7,000 gallons of gasoline. Dixfield is part of a consortium of towns and school districts in the area that have worked together to get lower fuel prices, said Madigan.
