BETHEL – A two-day festival commemorating a Pequawket Indian from the 18th and 19th centuries is to be held Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16.
Sponsored by the Mahoosuc Arts Council since 2000, the Mollyockett Day Festival is a smorgasbord of all-day events on Saturday.
The festive day honors Molly Ockett, who lived among and befriended western Maine’s early settlers from the mid-1700s to early 1800s.
Friday’s event is a library book sale from noon to 6 p.m. in Bethel.
Saturday activities begin with a 7:30 a.m. registration for the Key Bank Mollyockett Day Classic Road Race at Bethel Common, followed by a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Bethel Inn.
From 7:30 to 11 a.m., the United Methodist Church is to have a flea market and sale of coffee and doughnuts. The library book sale is to continue from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The children’s start time for the Classic Road Race is 8:30 a.m., and 9 a.m. for adult runners and walkers.
From 9 a.m. to noon, Odeon Hall and the Cole Block are to be open for viewing, and a farmers market is to be held at the Bethel Family Health Center.
The fifth annual Telstar High School Car Show is to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a free shuttle to the secondary school offered for the same times from Chapman Inn.
The Bethel Masonic Lodge is sponsoring a free child identification program at the Bethel Fire station from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there is to be free entry to the Bethel Historical Society’s “Molly Ockett and Her World” exhibit.
A parade, with the theme of “Molly Gras,” is to be held from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by the crowning of “Princess” Molly Ockett, and a treasure hunt presentation at the bandstand on the Common.
Additional events include a chicken barbecue at the fire station, entertainment there and at the bandstand, an Art-irondack Chair Auction, a ninth annual fiddler’s contest, duck race, and fireworks.
