FARMINGTON – Police are investigating an influx of graffiti in town, according to Farmington Detective Marc Bowering.

Bowering said Wednesday there have been at least six incidences since July 1 and “dozens” since the beginning of the year.

The tagger has sprayed several locations throughout the downtown business district, including the Homestead Bakery, Farmer’s Union, Depot Laundry, Children’s Task Force and two churches.

The word “devil” and obscenities were painted on the front of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and a storage shed at Henderson Baptist Church was also targeted. The most commonly seen tag of the illicit artist is “fag,” according to Bowering.

He said the scribbles are appearing overnight, with most happening after midnight. Some of the mischief was reported by property owners in the morning and others were spotted by police on night patrol.

Bowering believes the graffiti is the work of a single individual and is investigating the incidents as hate crimes, though police do not really know the culprit’s motives yet, he said.

“It’s definitely dirtying up the town. We don’t need this,” Bowering said.

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call the Farmington Police Department at 778-6312.
