WOODSTOCK – As the Maine Department of Transportation’s widening project on Route 26 at Merrifield Hill moves ahead, the town has agreed to lease the basement area at the Whitman Memorial Library to T. Buck Construction of Auburn.

According to Town Manager Vern Maxfield, the company doing the work has agreed to pay $500 per month for use of the area until the project is complete.

The widening project involves adding a truck lane on the steep hill, which has seen many traffic problems and accidents over the years, improving drainage and improving the road surface.

“Adding a truck lane has been something we have hoped would happen for many years,” said Maxfield.

He said the library basement has been rented on other occasions.

when construction has been done along Route 26. “It works out good for both the construction company and the town,” said Maxfield.

Asked how long Buck will use the library, he said he expects it to be through October.
