NORWAY – Motorcycle enthusiasts in the Oxford Hills have a new destination for bikes, parts, and service. Brownie’s Custom Cycle opened last month at 222 Waterford Road in Norway.

Owner Jamie Brown of South Paris said he’s been interested in motorcycles “forever.” He finished high school four years ago and got a job driving a logging truck. When he was not at work, though, he was working on bikes in his mother’s basement.

Finally, he said, “I got sick of driving and opened up the shop.” The shop, which Brown calls a “one-man operation,” is housed in a renovated warehouse. Brown remodeled the building on his own, creating a retail space in front and a full service mechanics’ room in back.

Although Brown is not a certified Harley-Davidson dealer, he is certified as a Harley mechanic. He has tires in stock for Harleys and can get parts for them. He also has parts for dirt bikes, street bikes and four-wheelers. Snowmobiles are another of Brown’s specialties, and he hopes to focus on them this winter.

Brown also noted that he stocks a range of tires and has a tire mounter and spin balancer in the shop.

The shop’s location, about three miles away from downtown Norway on Route 118, might not be an ideal commercial space, but Brown said it’s perfect for his shop. In the month the shop has been open, he said about 100 bikes have stopped in. “It’s a good ride, up by the lake,” he said. The road is far enough from town that people don’t mind the noise, he added, and “the neighbors have been great.”

Brownie’s Custom Cycle is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Saturday, when the hours are 8 to 3. Brown may be reached at 743-5469.
