WILTON – Nearly 30 firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed a self-contained motor home early Monday at 835 Orchard Drive.
The motor home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, Wilton Fire Rescue Lt. Kyle Ellis said Monday. The recreation vehicle’s gas tanks and tires blew out, he said.
The motor home, owned by Paul Gies of Wilton, was parked at the home of his parents, Joseph and Frances Gies on Orchard Drive, Ellis said.
A neighbor reported the fire about 1:32 a.m.
Ellis said the unoccupied motor home had been used Sunday morning, then parked in front of a large metal storage building, 30 to 40 feet away from the home.
One crew of firefighters worked to protect buildings and other property near the vehicle, he said, while another crew worked to extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, Ellis said, but fire officials believe it was some sort of electrical or fuel line problem.
