POLAND – A 16-year-old boy who was stabbed in the throat Tuesday night was in serious condition and undergoing surgery at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston early this morning.

Police said the teen, whom they did not identify, was stabbed by an older boy after an exchange of words at about 6:45 p.m. on Johnson Hill Road.

The attack resulted in a manhunt involving Androscoggin County Sheriff’s officials as well as Lewiston and Auburn police.

Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Slivinski said the victim was walking with another boy on Johnson Hill Road as the pair went to pick up a pizza at a nearby store.

A group of older teens drove by in a car and yelled at the younger boys out the window, Slivinski said. Moments later, the car returned, and one of the teens jumped out to confront the 16-year-old, he said.

Police said a few words were passed before the older teen pulled out a butterfly knife and stabbed the 16-year-old in the throat. The victim was wearing his arm in a sling after an earlier injury to his collarbone, Slivinski said.

The deputy said the knife entered the victim’s throat between the carotid artery and the windpipe. The suspects fled in their vehicle as the 16-year-old was left bleeding at the side of the road, police said.

Law enforcement officials around the county began searching for the suspects but by 1 this morning, none had been found. Slivinski said police have leads in the case.
