LEWISTON – Oxford Networks was tracking a spammer Tuesday morning blamed for overwhelming company computers and bringing its e-mail servers to a standstill.
The slowdown affected a couple of thousand customers who rely on Oxford Networks for e-mail, said Craig Gunderson, Oxford Networks chief operations officer.
The network began getting an unusually large amount of traffic on its e-mail servers Monday night, Gunderson said.
“We are talking about somebody sending an unusual amount of spam, in the range of 50,000 to 100,000 e-mails per day,” he said.
Gunderson said the company was closing in on the spammer late Tuesday morning and planned to pull the user’s account. Sending spam violates the terms of the company’s service agreement, he said.
