PORTLAND (AP) – Author-activist Carolyn Chute, best known for her 1985 debut novel “The Beans of Egypt, Maine,” was in a Portland hospital Wednesday after being injured in a traffic accident near her home in western Maine.

Chute, 58, was listed in satisfactory condition at Maine Medical Center.

Chute was injured Tuesday when a vehicle driven by her husband, Michael, was involved in a crash with a truck in the Parsonsfield-Porter area, according to a friend.

There were no immediate details on the crash, but Wyatt said he understood that the author suffered a hip injury and was transported by ambulance to Portland.

Chute’s other books include “Letourneau’s Used Auto Parts,” “Merry Men” and “Snow Men,” but her most ambitious novel, a 2,600-page manuscript which took five years to write, has yet to be published.
