Good news for hot dog and bikini enthusiasts.

Katharine Schultze, The Hot Dog Lady, can keep her cart near Mousam Lake.

In a compromise with the Shapleigh Board of Selectmen, first reported by the Portland Press Herald, Schultze can stay in business, but beginning next year she’ll have to move to the other side of the road.

Problems began last year when the town said Schultze was creating a safety problem along the highway despite little evidence to prove its point. The deal ends the argument, at least for a while.

Call it a victory for small business and beach goers or a setback to the neo-Puritans who might prefer to wrap us all in protective garbs of colorless cloth, we’re glad this piece of Maine kitsch will remain.
