PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A former employee at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island was indicted on Wednesday on a charge of embezzling $723,000 from the company.
The indictment handed up by a statewide grand jury alleges that Vincent Bottoni Jr., 72, stole the money while working as a cash receipts manager for more than eight years until he retired in April 2003.
The Johnston resident is scheduled to be arraigned on one count of embezzling or fraudulently converting to his own use money valued at over $100 in Providence County Superior Court on Aug. 10.
Michael Healey, a spokesman for the state Attorney General’s office, said Bottoni skimmed the money on a weekly to monthly basis. As cash receipts manager, Bottoni handled between $2 million and $3 million a day in cash, checks and wire transfers, Healey added.
He worked for the company for almost 34 years.
His telephone number is unlisted.
Phone messages left with Blue Cross & Blue Shield were not immediately returned.
