TURNER – Town Manager James Catlin reported to the Board of Selectmen this week that letters have been sent to 18 junkyard or auto graveyard operators cited at the last meeting for operating without a license.

He noted that the letters made it clear to the operators that no new licenses will be issued for the operations.

Those operating the facilities were informed of the timetable for ceasing operation and cleaning up the yards.

If work is not completed by October, operators were told, further action would be taken.

Catlin reported that the letter had drawn responses, and that one yard cited on the south end of Route 4 had produced permits and licenses establishing it as a vehicle towing and used car business.

Catlin said some other yards have been taken from the initial list provided by Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams, and others are being added.

Turner has seven licensed yards, at 488 County Road, 350 Cobb Road, 308 Fern St., 6 Bates Road, Walker Hill Road, 38 Quimby Road and 1630 Auburn Road.
