LEWISTON – Lewis T. Putnam, 91, passed away at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center on the night of July 20.

He was born in his home in Livermore, on June 21, 1914, son of the late Everett and Ethel (Thing) Putnam. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1931, and 11 years later on April 22, 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and fought in World War II.

On Dec. 7, 1945, he was honorably discharged from the armed forces; while in the service he earned the rank of staff sergeant, as well as a Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, but the most important thing he came out of the service with was his new British bride, Hilda Davis. Together, he and his wife raised two boys in Livermore Falls.

He worked at International Paper for many years, until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, the Robin Dow Senior Citizens Organization and the American Legion Post 10 in Livermore Falls.

When he was younger, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool and darts, and traveling to England to visit his wife’s family, but even ’til this day, his all-time favorite pastime was playing cards.

He leaves behind many cribbage buddies at Clover Manor. He will be missed for his lightheartedness in the most difficult of times, his very kind and gentle ways, and his ability to make those around him laugh. He is survived by his two sons, Brian and his wife, Marian Putnam, of Hyde Park, Mass., and Barry and his wife, Diane Putnam, of Lewiston; a grandson, James Putnam; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by the love of his life, Hilda Putnam, and all of his siblings.
