The following farms will be open Sunday for Open Farm Day in Androscoggin County:
CALDWELL FARMS Location: Turner, 313 North Parish Road Hours: 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Type of farm: Diversified organic dairy Activities: The farm has 150 milkers and 140 head of organic and natural beef herd. They will serve samples of the beef, share the history of the farm from conventional to organic, discuss care and feeding of organic beef. The farmers market trailer will be open. There will be young stock throughout the barns, horses in the pasture and flower gardens to stroll through. Directions: From Route 4, take Route 117 north and follow it through Turner Center. The farm is 1 miles up on the right from Turner Center. There is a sign at the foot of the hill and the barn is on top of the hill.
NEZINSCOT FARM Location: Turner, Route 117 Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Type of farm: Diversified organic dairy, sheep, goat and vegetable; farm store Activities: Wide variety of organic products, along with beef, veal, lamb, pork, chicken and free-range turkeys. Visit the animals, sample cheeses and meats, tour through the gardens, have lunch or tea in the tea house. Felting and spinning demonstrations and garlic harvesting and tasting will take place throughout the day. Directions: From Route 4, take Route 117 North, 1 mile on left and right. White barn with red face. Farm sign on the left. Midway between Turner Center and Turner Village.
NORLANDS LIVING HISTORY CENTER Location: Livermore, 290 Norlands Road Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Type of farm: Historic farm of the late 1800s Activities: Take a step back in time – you had better make it a big one, because at Norlands the year is 1870 every day. It was a time when many Americans still farmed. It was an age of innovations in techniques and tools used for farming. Come see it played out before your eyes. Try your hand at a scythe. Help wash the laundry or put up the harvest. Bring a picnic lunch. Handicapped accessible. Directions: From Lewiston and Auburn, take Route 4 north, turn right onto Route 108, look for the Norlands sign, go left on Norlands Road. From Augusta (a half-hour), take Route 202 west to Winthrop, then take Route 133 North to Wayne, turn left on Route 219 and right on Route 108, drive 3 miles to Norlands Road and turn right.
SUNNYSIDE GARDENS Location: Turner, 500 North Parish Road Hours: Noon – 5 p.m. Type of farm: Perennial nursery Activities: The nursery offers more than 900 varieties of perennials and complementary shrubs, many of which are displayed in the English-style border gardens on the grounds of this circa 1820 farmhouse. Garden tour will be at 1 p.m., discussing plant placement, choice and culture. Meet in front of the house. The owner will be on hand all day to answer questions about specific plants and their requirements. Cookies and iced tea will be served. Door prize: $25 gift certificate. Directions: From Route 4, take Route 117 through Turner Center. Continue on Route 117 for 2.3 miles. Farm on left. Or follow MDOT signs from Route 4.
