WILTON – Police in this small lakeside town are baffled as to why someone would leave a dead fish in someone’s mailbox.

Police Chief Wayne Gallant declined to identify the victim who found a small dead trout wrapped in paper in her mailbox on Orchard Drive on Thursday morning.

The residence has never been targeted for vandalism or harassment, and there have been no similar incidents in town, according to Gallant, who said it could be a prank.

The woman said she noticed a red truck pull up to her mailbox and then promptly leave the previous day but didn’t think anything of it until finding the foul fish.

Police have no suspects in the case, which has been deemed harassment.

“It was a hot day. Maybe someone was trying to leave her a baked fish,” Gallant said.

“There were no loaves of bread, just fish,” he added.
