The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice announced this week that it vigorously opposes the elevation of Judge John G. Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The group, a national coalition of religious organizations from 15 denominations and traditions, believes the nomination is a step toward the extreme right wing’s stated intention of overturning Roe v. Wade and end constitutional protections for women’s health and safety.

The coalition also believes the nomination raises grave concerns for religious freedoms. While a top government lawyer from 1989 to 1993, Roberts wrote a brief urging the Supreme Court to accept the constitutionality of prayer at a public school graduation ceremony. The court rejected his arguments.

In a statement issued this week, the coalition urged people of faith to contact their senators immediately to express their opposition to Roberts.

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice was founded in 1973. It includes the Episcopal Church; Presbyterian Church USA; United Church of Christ; United Methodist Church; Unitarian Universalism; Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist Judaism; Catholics for a Free Choice; and other, independent religious organizations.
