KENNEBUNKPORT (AP) – For many observers, it was quite a sight to see former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton – once bitter rivals – enjoying a game of golf together. Now the highest bidder can own a bit of presidential history.

A golf cart signed by both presidents on June 28 at the Cape Arundel Golf Club is for sale on eBay. The starting bid was $999.

The red cart with U.S. flags on the seat backs was given to President Bush by Gary’s House, a charity that provides a place to stay for families visiting seriously ill loved ones at two hospitals in Portland.

Bush, who sponsors “The George Bush Annual Golf Classic” to raise money for Gary’s House, used the golf cart for several years before giving it back to Gary’s House.

Gary’s House put it up for auction after Bush and Clinton signed it, and it was purchased by Howard Goldenfarb of Kennebunkport, said Richard Cady from C-it-Sell in South Portland, which is handling the online auction.

Goldenfarb thought the price he paid was undervalued, so he put it up for bid again, Cady said. Net proceeds will go to Gary’s House.

The eBay listing was placed on Thursday, and as of Friday afternoon there had been only one bid of $999 that failed to meet the reserve.

Bush and Clinton, who were 1992 election rivals, became friends when they led fund-raising as part of the relief effort for victims of the Asian tsunami. Bush extended the invitation to visit his summer home at Walker’s Point after learning that Clinton would be in Maine for a book signing.

In Kennebunkport, they went for a ride in Bush’s speedboat, Fidelity III, and then went out to a restaurant for dinner. The following day, they went to the Cape Arundel Golf Club, where they signed the golf cart.
