BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) – Local historians are planning a celebration this fall of Brattleboro’s heritage as a major producer of pipe organs.
The event coincides with the International Reed Organ Society’s annual conference in Brattleboro.
The Estey Organ Co., founded in 1846 by Jacob Estey, emerged as one of the world’s largest manufactures of reed, pipe, and later electronic organs.
“For people who are fascinated with reed organs, Brattleboro is indeed a holy site,” said John Carnahan, a member of the Brattleboro Historical Society and the Estey Organ Museum’s board of directors. “Estey Organ was the biggest name in the business, and its products are known across the world.”
EsteyFest will take place Oct. 13 through Oct. 16 as the International Reed Organ Society holds its conference in Brattleboro.
The celebration will include a gathering of company founder Estey’s descendants. It also will include banquets, lectures, workshops, concerts, a tour of the organs in the area, including the first Estey pipe organ ever made, and playing, listening and learning about old instruments.
