GREENE – During a special town meeting Monday, taxpayers authorized selectmen to use money in the surplus account to help pay for equipment to outfit a new plow truck.
The town appropriated $90,000 last March for a 2006 International truck and related plowing equipment, but it was not enough to cover the rising cost of steel.
On Monday, townspeople authorized spending $6,111.10 more with the stipulation that when the 1985 town truck is sold, the proceeds will go to the general fund.
The truck contract was awarded to Morrison & Sylvester of Auburn for $55,936.10.
Selectmen announced that the deadline for property tax discounts is 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1. Taxpayers interested in setting up a payment plan are asked to contact the town office.
