Dear Sun Spots: I have seen Styrofoam coffee and ice cream cups, plastic cups, cigarette butts and more on roadsides in Lewiston, Auburn and surrounding towns; actually, all over Maine.

Out of curiosity, what is the fine for littering in Maine? – No Name, No Town.

Answer: According to www.maine.gov, no person may throw, drop, deposit, discard or otherwise dispose of litter in any manner or amount: in or on any public highway, road, street, alley, public right-of-way or other public lands, except in containers, receptacles, or on property that is designated for disposal of garbage and refuse; or in any freshwater lake, river, stream, tidal or coastal water or on ice over the water. A person who disposes of litter in this way commits a civil violation and is subject to a forfeiture of not more than $200 nor less than $25 for the first violation and a forfeiture of not more than $500 nor less than $100 for a subsequent violation. In addition to the forfeitures imposed by this section, the court may order a person adjudicated to remove the litter dumped in violation of section 2264; pay the owner of the property triple the owner’s cost of cleanup or removal of the litter; or pay the person sustaining damages arising out of a violation of this subsection triple the actual damages or $200, whichever amount is greater, plus the injured party’s court costs and attorney’s fees if action results in a civil proceeding.

Dear Sun Spots: I am trying to find Herr’s ketchup chips. Do you know where I might find them? – No Name, No Town.

Answer: Contact New England Vending at 1 Lisbon Road, Lisbon, ME 04250, (207) 786-0721. According to Shane, they may be the only company in Maine carrying this product. Shane also believes it is a seasonal product. It’s likely you’ll have to purchase them by the case and, if so, will need to contact New England Vending with a few days notice. Ask to speak to Debbie, Dennis or Shane. In addition, you can also order Herr’s online at its Web site at www.herrs.com. Chips come in a variety of flavors which can make up your case or you can purchase a case of ketchup chips. There are 12, five ounce bags per case at www.herrs.com for $19.08 and they usually ship in five to seven business days.

In the meantime, perhaps you and your family will enjoy the following recipe from the company’s Web site above:

Ketchup chip grilled cheese sandwich ingredients; 2 slices of white bread, lightly buttered, 3-4 slices of cheddar or American cheese, approximately 12 Herr’s Ketchup Potato Chips, dash of black pepper. Method: According to the company’s Web site, this is a great spin on a regular grilled cheese sandwich. Alternate thin layers of cheese and Herr’s Ketchup chips. Grill sandwich, and enjoy!
