Summer service
NORWAY – The Norway Unitarian Universalist Church’s evening summer service on Sunday, July 31, will highlight the life and labors of the Rev. Sylvanus Cobb Sr. (born 1798 in Norway), 19th-century reformist, humanitarian and Universalist minister.
Peter Lenz, collector of western Maine foothills literary treasures, will share his research.
A simple supper, including salads and breads, will be available at 6:30 p.m. and the service follows at 7:15 downstairs in the Music Hall. The church is located at 479 Main St.
Show opening
NORWAY – The opening of the Commons Art Collective August show will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Fare Share Commons, 447 Main St.
The exhibit will feature Maya Best, Katey Branch, Gemma Morrill-Dreher, Joanna Reese, Michael Raymond, Steve Traficonte and Deb Wentworth. There will be an array of photography, paintings, pottery, collage and drawings.
The show will continue through Aug. 27. Gallery hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The gallery can also be accessed via the Fare Share Market next door.
Conant to talk
NORWAY – The Norway Historical Society welcomes all to hear a talk by Ben Conant on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The topic will be “Two Big Towns Go at It.”
Since their earliest days, the brother/sister communities of Norway and Paris have had a series of encounters not unlike those of many feisty siblings. The battle over the location of the county seat and the Norway-Paris “border war” are two of the skirmishes in Oxford County’s early years.
The talk will be given at the Norway Historical Society, 471 Main St., at 7 p.m. For more information, call 743-0505 or visit when the society is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Church meeting
WEST PARIS – The West Paris Baptist Church held its quarterly meeting on July 20. Members will collect food and nonfood items for the food pantry in August and September.
Vacation Bible School will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, Aug. 1 to 5, at the Mission Congregational and West Paris Baptist churches on Church Street. The closing program will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Mission Congregational Church.
The time for the Mission Congregational Church changes to 9:30 a.m. for Sunday school and 10:30 a.m. for the service.
Family Fun Night will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Baptist Church. The program will start with the “Bible Outburst” game.
