PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A paramedic accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of emergency equipment from the town of Cumberland and selling it on eBay has pleaded innocent to 11 criminal charges.

Lt. Thomas Heaney Jr. entered pleas Tuesday to eight felony counts and three misdemeanor counts in Providence Superior Court.

Heaney was accused in May of selling a town-owned defibrillator, a traction splint, extrication devices and other emergency equipment online.

State police detectives tracked his computer activity after receiving a tip. They say Heaney was using the screen name “RIMEDIC62” and offering an array of emergency and medical equipment for auction.

State police made several bids and won one for the traction splint for $132. Heaney allegedly directed them to send the payment to his address.

State police said the equipment they received was marked as property belonging to the North Cumberland Fire Department, where Heaney was a volunteer fireman.

Heaney had been on paid medical leave for several months when he was arrested, and continues to receive his salary and benefits.

He was released Tuesday on $1,000 personal recognizance, and is due back in court Sept. 26.

If convicted, Heaney could face up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $50,000 or three times the value of the property stolen, whichever is greater.
