REVERE, Mass. (AP) – A 19-year-old former Revere High School quarterback and star pitcher serving in the Navy was killed last weekend in a naval training accident.
Airman Lawrence Salamone died Saturday in a forklift accident on the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan. A Navy spokesman said the ship was conducting training exercises in the Gulf of Mexico, about 120 miles off Key West, Fla., when the accident happened in a weapons storage area.
The military is investigating the incident.
Salamone graduated from Revere High in 2003. He had served in the Navy for 19 months, the last eight on the Norfolk, Va.-based Bataan, said Amphibious Group 2 spokesman James Scott.
Al Blasi, Salamone’s baseball coach at Revere, described the former pitcher and infielder as a team player who was always willing to help out.
“His attitude was tremendous. He’d do anything you asked,” Blasi said. “He was the type of kid you’d like to have 15 of on the team.”
