AUBURN – An anonymous call to a local radio news station led transit officials to close down city bus service for more than an hour Friday.
Western Maine Transportation Services inspectors went through 20 buses Friday morning, looking for anything out-of-the-ordinary, said Glenn Gordon, WMTS community relations coordinator.
They didn’t find anything.
“There was nothing specific, just a vague secondhand threat,” Gordon said. “Once we discovered that our buses were safe, we put them back on the road.”
Auburn police received a report from a local radio station at about 11:22 a.m. A caller at the station urged them to “watch the news tonight for a bus to be blown up by a bunch of white boys.”
Police notified WMTS, which operates the Twin Cities’ Citylink bus system, as well as Hudson Bus lines and Vermont Transit.
All Citylink passengers were evacuated and the buses were directed to Great Falls Plaza in Auburn. Gordon said it took about 90 minutes to inspect all 20 buses.
Marsha Bennett, transit coordinator for the Androscoggin Regional Transit Authority, said the drivers were being more cautious Friday afternoon.
“It’s one of those things, making sure that if someone gets on with a package, they got off with a package,” Bennett said. “I just can’t wait for all the buses to be in and finished for the night.”
