OXFORD – Combine the amount of time that Mark Theriault and Dale Verrill waited between victory lane appearances at Oxford Plains Speedway, and you get more years than the average local stock car driver has lived.
Theriault has been seeking his second victory since breaking through all the way back on August 8, 1992. And Ronald Reagan was wrapping up his second term as president when Dale Verrill took his last previous victory lap on August 27, 1988. Neither man has been a full-time racer for that entire time, mind you, but each has endured more than his share of frustration since the last time they carted home the big trophy.
Theriault aced Friday night’s Strictly Stock B’ 20-lap test, while Verrill used the outside lane to pass Jim Duguay on the final circuit to capture the 40-lap Lee Auto Mall Late Model Stock feature.
Their watershed wins highlighted the first evening of New England Dodge Dealers Speedweek. The weekend of wall-to-wall racing continues with the American-Canadian Tour Maine-Ly Action Sports 100 on Saturday night and culminates with the 32nd annual TD Banknorth 250 on Sunday.
Recent high school graduate Craig Wade led wire-to-wire to collect the first Mini Stock victory of his career. In the night’s finale, Chris Staples ruled his second straight Pro All Stars Series Modified sprint at his home track.
Ben Tinker (Strictly Stock A’) and Jerry Harrison (Limited Sportsman) each won for the second time this summer.
