At long last, one of my reasons for leaving the GOP in 1994 is showing up in letters to the editor: the GOP’s idea that all Republicans must follow the leader in lock step and adhere blindly to incompetent GOP leadership, even when it’s at odds with the facts.

I refer to the letters from Republicans and ultraconservatives blaming Maine’s U.S. senators for the proposed base closures. If the GOP actually does resort to “blackmail” or “extortion-like” punishments for refusing to blindly follow the people at the top, it shows an extreme lack of leadership at the top of the GOP and the current administration.

It’s refreshing to see that Maine’s GOP senators retain the capacity for independent action based on facts – those inconvenient little items so glibly ignored by GOP leaders.
