AUBURN – Most of the city’s paving and road repair projects hinge on the City Council’s vote tonight.
Councilors are scheduled to vote on the first reading of a $5 million capital improvement bond package during their regular meeting tonight. Second reading is scheduled for Aug. 15.
That package contains $2.7 million earmarked for road paving, repair, reconstruction and drainage improvements. Paul Niehoff, Auburn pavement management technician, said he’s waiting for that money before he starts planning the rest of the city’s road work.
“Once we have that number in mind, we can start working up the cost figures for the street projects,” Niehoff said. “We can start scheduling the work.”
Councilors approved the capital improvement plan earlier in the summer, during the first budget hearings.
Niehoff said crews are still wrapping up projects paid for with the last capital improvements bond. Road crews should finish paving work on Clover Lane, Meadow Lane and Old Carriage Road this week and begin a small paving project on Center and Turner streets in the next couple of weeks.
“On the average, doing the same number of roads this year that we have every year,” Niehoff said. The current bond package included the rehabilitation of Jackson Hill Road and Garfield Road last spring.
