RUMFORD – A Family Dollar Store district manager has confirmed that the North Carolina-based retailer is looking into moving its store from Congress Street in Rumford to Route 2 in Mexico.
Chuck Truesdell, manager for all Family Dollar Stores in Maine and several others in New Hampshire, said Friday that tentative plans call for construction of a new building and a move to Mexico in a year.
He said business has been good in Rumford, and a larger store in a new location could be better.
“Nothing is written in concrete yet,” he said.
The possible site for the new store is across from Wal-Mart. A home once stood there, but it was burned a few months ago in a fire department training exercise. The property was owned by the late Tom Welch, and now it is owned by family members.
Mexico tax assessor Rob Stevens said the site has a 1.63-acre front parcel with 206 feet of highway frontage, and an 0.88-acre rear parcel. It abuts the road leading to Oakdale Country Club.
Mexico Town Manager John Madigan said Friday afternoon that he had not heard any official word that Family Dollar is planning a move to the town.
“It would be great if they did,” he said.
The Rumford Family Dollar Store opened about four years ago at the former Congress Street Mall.
