JUPITER, Fla. – Charles Joseph “Charlie” Arbor passed away on July 18, in Jupiter, Fla., after a long period of poor health.

He was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Rumford, to Joseph and Anna (Galinauski) Arbor. He graduated from Stephens High School, Hebron Academy and the University of Maine, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.

In 1947, he accepted a position at Hallowell High School, where he had considerable success as a coach. In 1953, he left Hallowell for Cony High School, where he taught before becoming principal in 1963. He retired from that position in 1976.

He served in the U.S. military during World War II. Before leaving for the war, he married Marguerite Cloutier; they were married for more than 50 years. They enjoyed their camp on Moosehead Lake and were famous throughout the North Woods for their CB monikers, “Chucklin’ Charlie” and “Moosehead Maggie.” Marguerite died in late December 2000.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Evelyn Arbor of Mexico; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was also predeceased by his only sibling, Joseph Arbor.

He will be deeply missed by them, as well as by many of his former students, athletes and colleagues. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Frank “Sonny” Lathe and the Lathe family for all the help and care they gave him these past years in Florida. Many who knew him will remember him for his devotion to young people, his generous spirit and his wry smile.
