TURNER – A 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s Run will be held on Sunday, Aug. 21, to raise money for the renovation and new equipment for playgrounds at Turner Primary and Elementary schools.

Starting at 8:30 a.m., the race and walk will offer a flat, fast course for all age groups beginning and ending at the primary school on Cobb Road.

Equipment at the playground is wooden and “has outlived its usefulness,” said Kerry Irish, chairman of the planning committee and a race director.

The playground is frequently used as a community and a school playground, with hundreds of youngsters daily swinging, sliding, and climbing on the splintering equipment.

All proceeds from the run/walk will be donated to the fund for the new playground equipment. The first 100 pre-registrants for the event will receive T-shirts. All children participating in either the 5K or the Kid’s Run will receive prizes, as will the top three adult finishers in each class. Among the prizes to be awarded will be pizzas from Antigoni’s and specially made pies donated by women from area churches.

Coaches and other school officials are being asked to recruit teams of runners and walkers from Turner, Greene and Leeds, as the playground equipment is principally a responsibility of SAD 52.

Runners, walkers, sponsors and race day volunteers are being recruited.
