BANGOR (AP) – A Bucksport woman has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Vioxx.

Carol Lally filed what may be Maine’s first federal lawsuit against Merck & Co. Inc., the New Jersey firm that manufactured the prescription painkiller.

Lally’s suit, which was filed last week in U.S. District Court in Bangor, seeks to include her in a class-action suit against the makers of Vioxx.

Her suit is one of more than 4,200 Vioxx-related state and federal lawsuits. Testimony was to continue Tuesday in a Texas case, the first to go before a jury.

In that civil case, jurors are to decide whether the painkiller caused a Texas man’s death in 2001 from arrhythmia.

Merck withdrew Vioxx from the market last year after a long-term study showed that patients who took the drug had an increased danger of heart attacks and strokes after taking Vioxx for more than 18 months.

In the Maine case, Lally said she hasn’t suffered any ill effects from Vioxx.

Her complaint says she’s at a greater risk of heart attack and stroke in the future.
