BUCKSPORT – Nathaniel Walton was unanimously elected state chairman of the Maine College Republicans on July 16.
The executive board met from July 15 to 17 to formulate an agenda for strengthening the organization going into the 2005-2006 academic year and elect a new chairman to replace Daniel Schuberth, who stepped down to focus on national responsibilities.
They also attended the Maine Republican Party State Committee meeting in Belfast where Schuberth introduced Walton.
Walton (Bates 08) is a native of Marblehead, Mass., who has spent summers in Maine. He was elected Bates College Republicans president his freshman year and his accomplishments there have included organizing a lecture by Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, bringing nearly 20 Bates students to the FreedomFest conference in Las Vegas and spearheading the passage of the Academic Bill of Rights through the Bates student government.
Walton has also served as communications director of the Maine College Republicans, writing numerous press releases. He is also active in student government at Bates and was elected president of the class of 2008 his freshman year.
Walton succeeds Schuberth, a three-term state chairman, who was elected national secretary of the College Republicans last month. Schuberth essentially built the Maine College Republicans from the ground up starting in July 2003.
He achieved national prominence for the organization last November when it was recognized as the “Best State Federation in America” for 2004 by the College Republican National Committee. Schuberth was named 2005’s “Best State Chair” by the CRNC in June.
