SOUTH PARIS – Erwin A. Sweatt, 88, of South Paris, died Aug. 2, at his home.
He was born in Newry, May 1, 1917, the son of Darwin and Agnes Frost Sweatt, and attended schools in Errol, N.H.
As a young man, he enjoyed working in the woods.
On Dec. 2, 1939, he married Hazel Dwinel in Bethel.
During the World War II era, he was employed at the Portland shipyard. After the war, he and his wife moved to South Paris, where he worked for Lloyd Flanders in the lumbering business; later he worked for Wilner Wood Heel Co. Subsequently he was employed by Sanborn’s Motor Express, from which he retired after many years.
He was proud to be a member of the Local Teamsters Union 340. He was an active member of the South Paris Methodist Church and the Norway/South Paris Lions Club, and was a charter member of the Paris Cape Historical Society.
He will be kindly remembered for his quiet way of always being a hard, faithful worker and a true friend to many.
He is survived by a son, Reginald and his wife, Joyce, of Waterford; a granddaughter, Debra Johnson and her husband, Michael, of Valrico, Fla.; a grandson, Reginald Jr., and his wife, Leslie, of Norway; two great-granddaughters, Kadi Sweatt and Molly Johnson; three great-grandsons, Jake Sweatt, and Michael and Matthew Johnson; two sisters, Rose Travers of Lancaster, N.H., and Ruth Bean of Bethel; a brother, Ralph Sweatt of Errol, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife on Feb. 11, after 65 years; a sister, Emily Cross; and a brother, Harold Sweatt.
