50 Years Ago, 1955

Boston – A federal grand jury was impaneled here today to investigate alleged price fixing by the gasoline industry in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The investigation was disclosed by Federal Judge William T. McCarthy.

Departing from usual secrecy in connection with grand jury action, the judge said he was announcing the purpose of the investigation because “the public has a right to know.”

He said the inquiry will delve into the practices allegedly followed by major gasoline and oil companies and retail outlets in connection with prices.
