BETHEL – The 26th annual Sudbury Canada Days, summer heritage festival of the Bethel Historical Society, will be held Aug. 12-14 this year at the Hastings Homestead barn and Middle Intervale Meetinghouse.
The weekend will begin with the annual Hall Memorial Lecture. This year’s lecturer is Bunny McBride, author of a number of works on Indian women and an Adjunct Lecturer of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. Her topic will be “Molly Ockett and other Wabanaki Women Healers.” The lecture is free and begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Moses Mason House Lecture Hall.
On Saturday, Aug. 13, a number of 18th century re-enactors are scheduled to set up in the morning and go through into Sunday, Aug. 14. Among those scheduled are Yellow Bear: Abenaki, a full portrayal of an Abanaki warrior; Samuel Goodwin’s Company, New England militia and artillery to do an artillery demonstration with one cannon, military drill and demonstrate camp life in that era; Cherry’s Company, 2nd New Hampshire, a light infantry militia company, who will present military drills and camp life, including the lives of women and children; and Royal Irish Artillery, a pre-Revolutionary War English provincial artillery, who may come with cannons.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the horseshoe tournament will begin. Participants are welcome. At 1 p.m., the events for the afternoon will commence, including children’s parade, children’s games, croquet and badminton tournaments, art show, craft demonstrations, historical videos, farming/logging exhibit, and more. In the evening, there will be the annual log driver’s bean supper followed by music from the local banjo band and the activities of the re-enactors.
Sunday will have more activities by re-enactors and in the afternoon, an opportunity to visit the exhibits, tour the 1895 Sunday River Schoolhouse and end with a hymn sing at the Middle Intervale Meetinghouse.
The Oxford County Bicentennial Quilt will also be on display throughout the weekend.
