MONMOUTH – Bill Van Horn is directing The Theater at Monmouth’s premiere of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging comedies, “Love’s Labours Lost.”
Starring in it are a number of Monmouth favorites, such as Mark S. Cartier, Dustin Tucker, Janis Stevens, Artistic Director Sally Wood and Jeri Pitcher, as well as several new additions from across the country.
“Love’s Labours Lost” is the story of four young men who swear off women, only to immediately meet four very desirable young women. The hijinks that follow are classic Shakespeare.
But there’s another twist.
In an effort to create the modern equivalent of Shakespeare’s casts, in which men played all the roles, both male and female, Van Horn has cast the play without regard to gender. An actress could play a man or a woman, and actor could play a woman or a man, and who knows who might be playing the character they fall in love with. Set in Edwardian England, this timeless story about the wonderful and comical nature of love is sure to become a favorite.
In a story already humorous and steeped with lust, trickery, and broken vows, the Theater At Monmouth’s version will have you rolling in your seat, said a spokesman.
This play opens tonight and will run through Aug. 25. People can call the box office, 933-9999, for reservations.
