WILTON – A Jay woman was charged with drunken driving Wednesday night after hitting a bicyclist head-on on Main Street and leaving the scene, police said Thursday.
Bicyclist Sarah Deveau, 15, of Wilton was in stable condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a hospital representative said Thursday evening.
The driver of the car was identified as Katy LaPlante, 21, of North Jay.
A witness reported that Deveau was wearing a helmet and riding south on Main Street in East Wilton toward Meadow Lanes Bowling Alley when she was hit, Wilton police officer Bob Cole said. She rolled over the hood, smashed the windshield, rolled off the car and landed on the ground near a house south of Railroad and Austin streets, he said.
LaPlante’s car dragged the bicycle 172 feet, continued to the Sweden House, up Spruce Lodge Road, onto Orchard Drive and was backing up on Pratt Street, Cole said, when he finally caught up to her.
Cole said he was notified of the accident at 6:29 p.m. and stopped LaPlante at 6:47 p.m., about three miles from where it occurred.
Police photographed and impounded the car, he said.
LaPlante complained of glass in her eye, Cole said, and was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington in his cruiser. She was treated and released to his custody, Cole said.
He arrested her on a charge of operating under the influence, and he also charged her with driving to endanger, failure to give notice by quickest means and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Cole said.
Cole took LaPlante to Franklin County jail in Farmington, and she was released Wednesday evening on $3,000 unsecured bail.
