“L-A bus system responds to threat” – that article (Aug. 2) refers to a bomb threat called in to a local radio station July 29. It was said that a bomb had been planted on a bus operated by Western Maine Transit. The caller said to “watch the news tonight for a bus to be blown up by a bunch of white boys.”

All the buses were taken to the Great Falls Plaza for an inspection.

Did anyone think about or even question that plan?

In the immediate area are the Esplanade (housing for the elderly), the YMCA (daycare facility), the courthouse and the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department and jail. Also, the post office, the Marriott Hotel, Peoples Bank, numerous other businesses and the new Auburn City Hall. These are all surrounding the area where a potential bomb was taken. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention the Dead River Co. has a facility on the other side of the railroad tracks with oil and propane tanks, which brings up another concern. There is an active railroad track between Dead River Co. and the Great Falls Plaza, and the railroad cars are often filled with hazardous materials.

In any event, the person who made the call to take a possible explosive device into the center of the city needs to rethink that plan.
