Congratulations to Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care on 40 years of caring, dedicated service to the youngsters of Androscoggin County.

I am a new employee to AHSCC. I recently became a family services advocate at Early Head Start in Lewiston, serving families of children from 6 weeks old to 3 years of age. My background is in working with, and for, developmentally disabled children and spans almost 45 years. I was thrilled to find regular and disabled children integrated at EHS and in the 3- to 5-year-old programs.

At EHS, the classes are small. The ratio of two children to one adult and the homelike atmosphere all work toward making the child care experience fun, safe and educational. The staffs at all the centers are well-trained and are deeply caring people. Needed therapies, such as occupational, physical, speech, sign language and/or development therapy, for disabled/delayed children are conducted in the classroom so children and staff all learn together.

I can think of no other child care placement that truly personifies “giving a child a head start.”

Let’s keep up the great work for another 40 years.
